Vegan Lisbon
In recent years, Lisbon has become a top spot for plant-based restaurants as Portugal’s vegan population has grown, and there are now dozens to be discovered along the city’s historic streets.
Lisbon’s oldest vegan eatery, The Food Temple, serves exquisite seasonal dishes on the quaint steps outside. Near the waterfront, at Al Sanpietrino Trattoria, Alex and Kajsa have recreated the rustic ambience of an Italian restaurant, and in Cais do Sodré, Kong prepares hearty yet refined dishes with global inspirations.
Based in the northern suburbs, Spill the Greens offers accessible vegan takeaway across the city, while closer to the centre, GAL Cafe serves vibrant meals, O Jardim da Jujé encourages visitors to reconnect with nature and O Gambuzino delivers bold flavours through its casual fine dining experience. In Largo de São Sebastião, family-run café My Mother’s Daughters honours the earth’s bounty with nourishing meals, and throughout the capital, The Green Affair celebrates natural ingredients in its stylishly serene restaurants.
Elsewhere in the centre, A Minha Avo’s innovative chef, Carina Monteiro, crafts distinctive plant-based versions of Portuguese classics, the tranquil AO 26 Vegan Food Project elevates traditional dishes, and Organi Chiado follows macrobiotic principles to ensure its meals are healthy and tasty. Meanwhile, plant-based comfort food can be found at Vegan Junkies and Mother Burger, which specialises in juicy burgers and creamy milkshakes.
Over in Costa de Caparica, beach-goers can sample vegan fast food in the laid-back environment of Bone Free or enjoy the delicious fermented breads at Slow Sourdough & Co, which also has a collaborative café with coffee specialists Ele Ela near Lisbon city centre. And for those wanting decadent ice cream and other sweet treats, there is the award-winning Scoop 'n Dough, the unique Casa da Mully and the authentic gelato of confectioner Marco Bauli’s UAO Smart Italian Gelato.
Lisbon’s impressive range of vegan eateries means that there are plant-based options to suit all tastes, from sophisticated dining and health-boosting meals to comforting junk food and indulgent desserts.
