Mathilda Motte founded La Maison Du Mochi after discovering the sweet, chewy Japanese rice cakes during a 2016 trip. Since opening her first café in Paris’ fashionable 6th arrondissement in 2019, she has expanded across the capital and south to Lyon. Her elegant tea rooms offer delicious freshly made mochi with fillings ranging from traditional Japanese anko – a sweet bean paste – to inventive combinations like gooseberry-elderflower; the perfect accompaniment to a relaxing tea, a warming infusion or an invigorating coffee. Mathilda shares her passion for Japanese desserts through mochi-making workshops and has even created the chokoshi: a culinary innovation that blends chocolate and praline with a Japanese caramelised rice candy called okoshi, encapsulating the unique flavours of La Maison Du Mochi’s indulgent treats.

- serenewisdom2Price range high per mochi, however they are fresh, gooey inside, with a large filling and delicious flavours. We got yuzu, matcha and black sesame (kindly recommended by the waitress) and cut them in half to share for two! The best thing is that the mochi are #vegan
- Soonyata MianlamaiLovely mochis. The seller is so nice, very friendly, very welcoming, very passionate about the products. She explains all the flavors of mochi really well. And we really enjoy the desserts. I give 4/5 because it’s a bit expensive.
- OlesyaDelicious mochis and good choice of drinks with matcha twist. There are two tables inside and two tables outside, so very few places to dine in but even if there is a big line, a lot of people take it away. So don’t be too discouraged if you want to have a sit. There is a big chance you will!
- Zarry BizevaFreshest lightest most delicious mochi. I enjoyed a black sesame one. Definitely coming back for more.
- C JiDelicious mochi made with love. Seasonal flavours and about €3-€4 euro per mochi. Not exactly the cheapest but for authentic well made mochi it is worth the price. Mochi is expensive even in Japan when it’s made well. They also sell furoshiki, Yuzu creme, red bean “jam” and some books inside. Cute little store.
